RYOKAN AND RESTORATION HALL
During my study abroad in Japan, my design studio explored architecture as an act of pause within continuous movement, drawing from the cultural concept of ma—the space between moments that gives form meaning. The project reinterpreted traditional Japanese architecture through contemporary spatial strategies, proposing a modern ryokan integrated with a restoration hall dedicated to the care and repair of luggage, clothing, and leather goods. Rather than functioning as a fixed destination, the building unfolds as a sequence of thresholds that slow the body and quiet the mind, allowing occupants to momentarily step out of transit and into ritual, reflection, and attentiveness. Through this framework, the architecture frames moments of rest, craft, and care as essential pauses within an otherwise constant flow.
